I've been noticing lately that many html messages I receive are not Quoted Printable encoded. They are simply sent as plain html. If none of the lines in the html are longer than 998 characters, the smtp standard, is it really necessary to encode the html message?

The original intention of quoted-printable encoding is to ensure that a system with a differing transport mechanism does not corrupt the message (i.e. an EBCDIC Mail gateway). While it's possible to send a message that isn't quoted-printable we don't really recommend it and can't support any issues that may result from it.
