posted January 18, 2007 9:40 AM Hi, Our customer is encountering a problem trying to comunicate with our SNMP based systems across a Microsoft VPN client. After sending a SnmpGet the manager program recieve the following error message form Power SnmpActiveX: Snmp Control Error: The virtual circuit was reset by the remote side executing a "hard" or "abortive" close. This normally results if the peer application on the remote host is suddenly stopped, the host is rebooted or the remote host used a "hard close". This error may also result if a connection was broken due to "keep-alive" activity detecting a failure. This error is also be reported under Windows 2000 when a UDP packet is sent to a host with no service open on the specified port. Trying the same using Cisco VPN Client seems to work. Any solution or workaround ! Thank in advance |

posted January 18, 2007 2:39 PM It looks as if the VPN is breaking the connection. When you get this error message, does the VPN channel remain connected? Can you access the remote machine, after the above exception? If you re-try to establish a connection from the Manager (after the error message), does it connect? -Raj |

posted January 19, 2007 10:54 AM Thank you for the answer. We sent your reply to our customer and this is the answer: After this error is reported twice we get a "no response from host" message and cannot connect to the element. The VPN tunnel remains connected. Our 3rd party SNMP manager(IPSwitch remains connected and can read the data over the VPN. It is only your manager which cannot connect. We are able to ping the equipments over the VPN. Please suggest us what we can do to investigate the problem Thank in advance |

posted January 19, 2007 5:25 PM What ports are being used here? Are they the default (162 - Manager and 161 - Agent)? Does the 3rd party SNMP manager also use the same port as above? When you say: "IPSwitch remains connected..." It makes me believe that Dart's Manager and this manager were connected to the same agent, initially. But Dart Manager disconnects, leaving behind the other manger connected. Is this correct? If this problem comes only with Microsoft VPN, did you check the MS VPN, if that is using/blocking some ports being used by the Dart's manager? -Raj |

posted January 22, 2007 7:54 AM Solved! This is the feedback of our customer: I have your Manager now working. I had opened the correct ports on the firewall in the firebox policy. I ran ethereal on the machine and could see denied requests. Eventually I actually poked a hole in the firewall for traffic originating from our public IP range. I can only assume that the firewall rules were lying!! --------------------------------------- Thanks very much for all your help Raj! |
