Topic: Serious FTP List limitations
N/A posted May 2, 2001 2:50 PM

I've run into problems getting the FTP control to correctly parse various FTP listings and I'm hoping you can give me some advice to help. From reading the Support Forum it appears others have run into the same problem and the solution always seems to be "Parse it yourself using the Text property". This is disappointing because I wanted an FTP control so the details of various implementations would be taken care of by the FTP experts and I could concentrate on what my app does.

The FTP control only handles listings from UNIX and NT hosts. I also discovered through testing that the control won't correctly parse some UNIX hosts ( I noticed others had the same problem - see the thread titled "ftp.List" posted on 3/27/2001 ). When I found this problem I tried using my stand-alone FTP app ( WS_FTP Pro ) to see if it could correctly display the data - it did. It's frustrating to see a $40 FTP app handle listings that my $250 FTP control can't.

My program will be used by people who might be connecting to any number of different FTP hosts. Given this, is there any advice, source code, etc to help me avoid having to learn about all of the various FTP list formats and develop my own parse routines for them?

Thanks.

Hello,

Thank you for the feedback. I understand that not having certain functionality can be frustrating, but when we create our products, our goal is to enable people to build applications such as WS_FTP, and thus we must walk a fine line between implementing and giving an individual the capability to implement a functionality themselves. We made a decision to support some common implementations for listing, but we could not support every server. We felt that Listing is something that can be easily accomplished using standard VB (or other language) parsing techniques as long as we provided the necessary raw data. For the future, we will consider adding more parsing functionality for listing. Good luck on your project.

Best Regards,
